"Disaster" couples showed signs of being in fight-or-flight mode in their relationships. Having a conversation sitting next to their spouse was, to their bodies, like facing off with a saber-toothed tiger. - Emily Esfahani Smith

Class Helps Teens with Stress
The Bulletin, December 3, 2014
Students were asked to visualize a stressful moment in their lives and notice the negative internal dialogue in their heads.  Learning how to recognize the "inner critic" is crucial for teens, Portland, Oregon teacher Caverly Morgan said.  "It's very important that teens learn how to do that, because that critical voice leads to behaviors that are extremely unhealthy, such as overeating, bullying, even committing suicide," Morgan said. - Gosia Wozniacka

Meditation Comfortably Settled in the Mainstream
The Bulletin, February 21, 2015

"Meditation... has gone viral.  The unrelenting siege on our attention can take a good share of the credit; stress has bombarded people from executives on 24/7 schedules to kids who feel the pressure to succeed even before puberty.  Meditation has been lauded as a way to reduce stress, ease physical ailments like headaches and increase compassion and productivity." - Mary MacVean

A Small Part of the Brain, and Its Profound Effects
The New York Times, February 6, 2007

"The bottom line, according to Dr. Paulus and others, is that mind and body are integrated in the insula.  The insula itself is a sort of receiving zone that reads the physiological state of the entire body and then generates subjective feelings that can bring about actions, like eating, that keep the body in a state of internal balance.  Information from the insula is relayed to other brain structures that appear to be involved in decision making, especially the anterior cingulate and prefrontal cortices." - Sandra Blakeslee

Brené Brown:  The Power of Vulnerability

http://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability?language=en

Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work.   She has spent the past ten years studying vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame. She spent the first five years of her decade-long study focusing on shame and empathy, and is now using that work to explore a concept that she calls Wholeheartedness.  She poses the questions:
How do we learn to embrace our vulnerabilities and imperfections so that we can engage in our lives from a place of authenticity and worthiness? How do we cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection that we need to recognize that we are enough – that we are worthy of love, belonging, and joy?
